Is Your ERP Working as Hard as You Are? 5 Signs It's Time to Reevaluate
Let’s be honest. You chose your ERP so you could break free from the dreaded collection of endless spreadsheets.
But somewhere between the last upgrade and today, a lot of manufacturers and distributors ended up right back where they started patching gaps with Excel, using tribal knowledge, and leaning too heavily on the one person who “just knows how to get the report right.”
If any of this sounds familiar, it might be time to take a hard look at what your system is actually doing for you. Read each one and take a moment to reflect on your day-to-day reality.
1. Your team runs the business in spreadsheets, instead of the ERP
If the real inventory count, the real margin, or the real production schedule lives in a spreadsheet someone rebuilds every Monday, your ERP is simply an expensive formality.
2. “Let me get back to you” is your default answer
If your honest answer when customers ask about stock or supervisors ask about part shortages is always “let me check and call you back,” your system isn’t giving your team the visibility to answer in real time.
3. Growth feels like a fight with the system
A new location, product line, or customer volume should make the business stronger. If every expansion means new workarounds or a call to IT before you can even start, your ERP is limiting growth that you’re working hard every day to build.
4. Month-end close takes days you don’t have
A close that drags into the second week of the month is a strong sign the system isn’t capturing clean data in real time, which means every decision made before close is made on stale numbers.
5. Your vendor’s roadmap doesn’t mention your version anymore
If new features and updates are landing everywhere except the version you’re running, that’s a sign you’re on a path your vendor has already stopped investing in.
NOTE: None of this means your business is doing something wrong. It means your ERP hasn’t kept pace with how much your business has grown, and that’s a solvable problem, once you can see it clearly.
Take stock this week. If two or more of these sound familiar, it’s worth a conversation before it becomes a crisis.
